Dazed Faves is the series where we talk all things online – that surreal meme account you’re obsessed with, weird conspiracy theory subreddits, ASMR YouTubes, or slime Instagrams.

SEBii is so terminally online it hurts. The New York-meets-Shanghai artist makes music that sounds like a videogame, with MIDI-centric sounds and sound effects that go spoing! “Without the internet SEBii wouldn’t exist,” he asserts. “Almost all of the influences I discovered are because of the internet.” With backing from industry names such as Anthony Fantano and Playboi Carti (the latter shared a photo of the rapper on his Insta stories back in December), SEBii’s debut album VVSS2 builds on the epicness of past releases – a succession of three EPs based on the primary colours (VVBLUE, VVRED and VVYELLOW), which each represent different facets of SEBii’s character – to form a bouncy pop universe inspired by Nintendo faves such as Donkey Kong and Pokémon Platinum.

Flexing his internet rapper credentials across 18 kaleidoscopic tracks, SEBii delves into the full spectrum of human emotion, speedrunning the intricacies of money, love and relationships across quickfire bars like, “I hit it raw like a carpaccio” and “I hit so hard / pinata”. It’s the sort of catchy, oddball lyrics that the artist’s known for, which he pairs with post-digicore production and DJ Mustard baselines that will hit even the most fried attention spans.

FAVE TIKTOK: EXPLAIN IT PRANK

SEBii: OMG I loovvvvee pranks and this one is one of my faves. I will go on his page and like all the videos of him doing this prank, where he basically tells a joke that doesn’t make sense and then asks them to explain. When the explanations hit, you just watch people shatter – it’s so funny. You completely break someone’s reality, it’s a good one.

FAVE TV SHOW: MOB PSYCHO 100

SEBii: This is the art I aspire to make. Mob Psycho 100 is so funny, goofy and playful, but when it gets real and emotional, it hits hard. It’s about this middle-school boy who is not popular or particularly interesting, but he has insane psychic powers. But even though he has all this power, he doesn’t care for it and just wants to be a better person. It’s very wholesome. If you have seen Mob Psycho you would know, it’s very SEBii-core. I’m a huge fan of the [Japanese Manga] author ONE. It’s really such a great story and one of the best animes ever. 

FAVE TWEET: MY CARTI STORY REPOST 

SEBii: I didn’t want to add my own tweet for this, but like this was such an insane moment for me. I’ve been a huge fan of Carti for a minute and he never posts on socials so this meant a lot to me. He was one of the artists that got me into making music, so this was so surreal I was literally shaking when it happened. Everyone was calling me and it all happened when I was on a date lol. Shit, my life is an anime fr.

FAVE YOUTUBE: CHROMATIC NOTES IN PAPER MARIO 

SEBii: This YouTube channel is goated. This video is how I discovered what chromatic notes are, so it’s a super important to me. I would recommend anyone reading this to watch this video, it’s super interesting and also helps give a lot of context to this sound that I’m trying to create. Shout out to Nintendo games and shout out 8-bit Music Theory.

FAVE ALBUM: MAMA’S GUN

SEBii: It’s hard for me to pick a favourite album or song. But recently I’ve been listening to Erykah Badu a lot, so I would say Mama’s Gun. Her voice is so beautiful, I got the high-pitched voice thing from her, because when I was younger I would always want to sing like her. Also, a lot of her stuff is super chromatic so it’s been inspirational for me recently, as I’m trying to make more stuff in this vein, like some neo-soul stuff.
