Thundercat is taking over Dover Street Market

The US musician launches his debut collection with London’s fave fashion destination, plus more news you missed this week

“Growing up playing music around LA it was always stereotypical for a musician to wear a suit to look ‘respectable’ and I hated that so very, very much,” says Thundercat of his early-career interactions with fashion. “My heroes were the likes of Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarke, George Duke, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, and everything Japanese and Pharrell.” If you know anything about Thundercat’s psychedelic, anime-inspired style, then you’ll know it’s an amalgamation of all these influences, a mad-cap assembly of patchwork fabrics and cartoonish colours. And for the first time, the acclaimed musician is letting us in on the secrets of his style, launching his debut collection in collaboration with Dover Street Market.

The SS24 collection sees Thundercat smatter his logo across collegiate-style cardigans and a football top, while Japanese influences are telegraphed through silken kimono shirts and manga-inspired graphic tees. Along with all this, a limited edition run of 250 holographic crew necks and 170 distressed shirts have been designed exclusively for DSM’s London flagship. Speaking of the impetus to get in the fashion game, the musician said that, “my sense of fashion was passed down to me by my parents… I always wondered to myself, why most of the things I was attracted to aesthetically, I did not see in real life? And it would make me question what was wrong with everyone.” Head over to DSM’s e-Shop to see the full collection.
